Shooting Drills
Lacrosse shooting is about placement, not just power. The goal is 6x6 feet, and the goalie is standing in the middle — you need to hit corners.
The Overhand Shot (Foundation)
- Hands apart on the stick (wider = more power, closer = more control)
- Step toward the goal with your lead foot
- Rotate hips and shoulders, pull the stick forward
- Release at the highest point — snap the wrists
- Follow through toward the target
Where to Shoot
- Low corners — the hardest saves for goalies. Aim 6 inches off the ground, just inside the pipes.
- Off-hip — the side away from the goalie’s stick. Hard to reach.
- High corners — effective but riskier. Miss high and it sails over.
- Five-hole — between the goalie’s legs. Works on quick shots when the goalie is upright.
10-Minute Shooting Workout
- Close-range placement (3 min): Stand 8 yards out, 5 shots to each corner. Placement only.
- On-the-run shots (4 min): Jog toward the goal from the wing, shoot low corner. 5 from each side.
- Time-and-room (3 min): Catch a pass, take one cradle, shoot. Simulate game speed.
Sidearm Shot
- Lower the stick angle, release from the side
- Harder for goalies to read because it comes from a different angle
- Good for shooting around a defender or from behind the goal line extended
Low and to the corners wins games. The goalie's hardest saves are low shots to the off-stick side. Master this shot first.
