Position Cheat Sheet
| Position | Stick | What They Do |
|---|---|---|
| Attack | Short stick | Score goals, set up plays from behind the goal |
| Midfield | Short stick | Play both ends, transition, most versatile |
| Defensive Midfield | Short or long | Faceoffs, transition defense |
| Defense | Long pole (6 ft) | Mark attackers, check, clear the ball |
| Goalie | Goalie stick (wide head) | Stop shots, direct the defense |
Short Stick vs. Long Pole
- Short stick (40-42”): Attackers and midfielders. Better for ball handling and shooting.
- Long pole (52-72”): Defenders and some defensive midfielders. Better reach for checking.
Every position handles the ball. Unlike some sports, every lacrosse player needs stick skills — including defenders and goalies.
