Defensive Concepts
Man Defense
Each defender marks one attacker. When one defender gets beaten, an adjacent defender must “slide” (help). The remaining defenders rotate to cover.
The Slide
The most important defensive concept in lacrosse. When a dodge beats a defender:
- The adjacent defender slides to the ball
- The next defender rotates to cover the open man
- The whole defense shifts
Zone Defense
Defenders cover areas, not specific players. The 2-3 zone and 3-3 zone are common. Forces the offense to shoot from outside.
Clearing
Moving the ball from the defensive end to the offensive end after a save or turnover. Like a fast break in basketball — transition is where easy goals happen.
Riding
The offense pressuring the clearing team to force a turnover. Good riding teams get extra possessions.
"Slide early, slide hard." The defender who hesitates gives up a goal. Commit to the slide and trust your teammates to rotate.
